Spain and Portugal Respond to Massive Power Outage: Investigation Ongoing

The Spanish Prime Minister addressed the massive blackout that affected the Iberian Peninsula, leaving large parts of Spain without electricity. Speaking from the Palacio de La Moncloa, the seat of government, he stated that authorities still do not know the cause of the outage and are not ruling out any hypothesis.

“It is better not to speculate; we will eventually know the causes. We are not discarding any hypothesis, but right now, the priority is restoring electricity to our homes,” he said.

Earlier, the Prime Minister of Portugal suggested that the outage likely originated in Spain. “We know that the origin was not in Portugal,” he said, adding, “since we are interconnected with Spain, all indications point to the origin being there — but I do not wish to speculate.”

Speculation about a possible cyberattack emerged early in the day. However, AntĂłnio Costa, President of the European Council and former Portuguese Prime Minister, stated that “so far,” there is no evidence indicating that a cyberattack was responsible.

Spain’s grid operator also urged the public to avoid “speculations” regarding the cause of the outage. This statement came after the President of the Andalusia region, Juan Manuel Moreno, suggested that “a blackout of this magnitude could only result from a cyberattack.”

Authorities estimated that full restoration of power could take between six and ten more hours.
