In a tragic maritime accident, the Buque Escuela Cuauhtémoc of the Mexican Navy collided with the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City on the evening of May 17. The incident occurred as the ship was departing the city after a four-day visit as part of its international training tour. The collision resulted in the deaths of two crew members and left dozens injured.

Power Failure Leads to Fatal Collision

According to official reports, the Cuauhtémoc suffered a power failure while navigating toward Iceland, causing it to lose control and strike the iconic bridge. The accident happened around 8:26 p.m. local time, leading to a partial collapse of the ship’s 45-meter main mast, which crashed onto the deck and caused extensive damage.

The ship, which departed Acapulco on April 6 with 277 crew members—including 175 cadets, the largest class in Mexican Navy history—was on a goodwill and training mission across multiple international ports. The New York Fire Department confirmed that at least 35 people were injured in the incident, with four in critical condition.

Official Reactions from Mexico and the U.S.

President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico expressed condolences via social media: “We deeply regret the loss of two crew members aboard the training ship Cuauhtémoc. Our support and solidarity go out to their families.” The president confirmed that both the Mexican Consulate in New York and the Ambassador to the United States are actively supporting the victims.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams also responded, highlighting coordination with Mexican authorities and confirming the vessel’s intended course to Iceland. He reiterated the city’s commitment to assisting affected Mexican nationals.

Investigation and Safety Measures Underway

The Mexican Navy’s Secretariat (SEMAR) has temporarily suspended the training voyage. In a statement, the Navy assured that safety protocols were activated immediately and that local and naval authorities are assessing the condition of both personnel and equipment.

The Navy has pledged to provide ongoing updates on the health of the injured and future steps regarding the Cuauhtémoc’s voyage. This incident marks a serious setback for one of Mexico’s most symbolic naval missions, but also underscores the importance of intergovernmental coordination in times of crisis.
