April 2, 2025 – EDP Renewables has announced plans to auction 90 wind turbines and associated equipment initially purchased for two large-scale wind projects in La Guajira, Colombia. This decision confirms the company’s withdrawal from the construction of the Alpha (212 MW) and Beta (280 MW) wind farms, which were set to be Colombia’s largest wind energy projects.
Project Cancellation and Auction Details
The wind turbines, which arrived in Colombia in December 2021, are currently stored at Puerto Brisa (La Guajira) and Cartagena. Due to regulatory challenges, the projects failed to progress, leading EDP Renewables to liquidate its assets via an online auction, providing a significant opportunity for the global wind energy sector.
The turbines, Vestas V162—5.6 MW models from the EnVentus platform, include:
- 90 nacelles, hubs, and powertrains
- 450 tower sections (90 towers split into five segments each)
- 270 blades (79 meters each)
- Cooling units and assembly components
Additionally, auxiliary materials (BoP) for wind farm installation, including transformers, electrical components, cables, and control units from leading brands such as Siemens, WEG, and GE, will be auctioned separately.
Online Auction Process
The auction will be conducted on Escrapalia, a specialized platform managed by Surus. The process includes:
- Application Phase (April-May 2025): Interested buyers sign a confidentiality agreement and submit a request for quotation.
- Qualification & Bidding (Until May 20, 2025): Approved applicants will access additional project details and site visits before submitting binding offers.
- Final Online Auction (June 24, 2025): Qualified bidders will enter a competitive online bidding round.
- Contract & Payment (June-July 2025): Winners will finalize the purchase and arrange logistics for equipment removal.
The strategic location of the turbines in ports with maritime and land access facilitates their export to international markets.
This auction marks the end of EDP Renewables’ involvement in La Guajira’s wind energy development while offering a significant opportunity for industry stakeholders to acquire high-quality wind power assets.
