Chile Strengthens Its Leadership in Renewables with Latin America’s Largest Solar + Battery Plant

Quillagua project sets a new benchmark for energy storage in the region

Chile has taken a major step forward in clean energy development with the inauguration of Quillagua, the largest solar power plant with battery storage in Latin America. Located in the Antofagasta desert, the project showcases the country’s progress toward building a cleaner and more resilient energy matrix.

High-capacity solar backed by long-duration storage

Developed by Contour Global, the plant boasts a capacity of 221 MWp and is equipped with a 1.2 GWh battery system, enabling it to deliver 200 MW for 6.2 hours after sunset. This ensures a stable solar energy supply even during nighttime and allows for surplus energy to be injected into the grid.

A key step to grid stability

Antonio Cammisecra, CEO of Contour Global, emphasized that the project is “key to stabilizing the grid”, helping to balance daytime oversupply and nighttime demand. He also revealed plans to explore wind energy in Chile, aiming to diversify the company’s technological portfolio in the region.

Chile’s renewable momentum

Chile has increased its solar and wind energy share tenfold in just six years. With renewable resources estimated at 70 times the country’s current energy demand, official projections forecast that renewables will make up 70% of the national energy matrix by 2030.
