Chile Approves Environmental Impact Declaration for Calcium Oxide Transport Expansion in Antofagasta

Antofagasta, Chile – April 6, 2025 – The Environmental Assessment Service (SEA) has issued a favorable evaluation of the Environmental Impact Declaration (DIA) for the project “Land Transport of Calcium Oxide in the Antofagasta Region: Increase in Frequency,” submitted by Servicios de Transporte Integrado Limitada.

The project, backed by a US$4.5 million investment, aims to significantly scale up the overland transport of calcium oxide—also known as quicklime—within the Antofagasta Region. It proposes an increase in transport frequency from the current 120,000 tons per year to 715,000 tons annually, servicing mining operations detailed in the DIA.

Transport activities will utilize silo-type semi-trailer trucks operating from existing facilities of INACAL S.A. and CALTEC SpA, both located in the municipality of Antofagasta. The quicklime will be delivered to various mining clients via existing public and private routes already in use by similar transport operators.

Operations are scheduled to commence once the truck units are loaded at origin sites. The project anticipates an average of 69 truck trips per day, moving approximately 1,959 tons of calcium oxide daily—adjustable according to client needs, though not exceeding the annual cap.

Importantly, the initiative does not involve a construction phase. No new infrastructure or civil works will be required, as the project relies entirely on existing facilities, routes, and logistical frameworks.

This green light from the SEA marks a critical step in facilitating increased industrial supply efficiency in Chile’s northern mining heartland, further supporting the region’s vital contribution to the national economy.
